Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language, and has the second-largest number of native speakers in the world, after Mandarin Chinese. It is one of the official languages of India, and is an official language of the Indian government. It is also one of the 22 languages officially recognized by the Republic of India. In the 2011 census, there were approximately 500 million speakers of Hindi.
English is the primary language spoken in India, but it’s not the official language of India. In fact, India has no official national language. That’s because India is a very diverse country, with dozens of different languages and dialects. The Constitution of India names Hindi as the “official language,” but it actually doesn’t have any official language—in fact, it doesn’t even mention official languages.
