Surprisingly, there is no official national aquatic animal of India. The choice of the national aquatic animal of India is largely dependent on the choice of the ruling government. Until 2000, India had no official national aquatic animal.
However, in 2000, the government of India declared the Ganges river dolphin as the national aquatic animal of India. There has been some controversy about this choice, from experts and non-experts alike. However, the Ganges river dolphin is the most familiar aquatic mammal for most people, and is therefore the best choice.
In 2010, a new government was elected, and a new animal was chosen as the national aquatic animal of India. The choice was made by the then Prime Minister, who selected the Gangetic River Dolphin.
